Fellow New England USPTA Professionals,

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be the President of your USPTA New England Division.  I am looking forward to working with the fantastic new board, state reps and most of all, you, our New England members.  Here are two of my goals over the next two years:

  1. Give our members more value for their annual membership dues.
  2. Have more members included and involved with all of our USPTA New England projects such as conventions, Tennis Across America Days, Lessons For Life events and our many other programs.

I hope that you will contact me or any board member to make suggestions on how we can improve our organization and be better tennis professionals.  Your feedback is necessary and needed. We look forward to hearing from you, no matter how creative or “outside the box” the idea is.  Thank you and I look forward to meeting many of you in the near future.

Chris Stevens
USPTA NE President

New England USPTA Members,

We have three important items to share with you.

  1. Let’s start with a recent change from within our board of officers.  Our Regional Vice President, Marcy Rubinstein has recently resigned due to personal reasons.  The next step was to follow our bylaw procedure and fill this vacant position. The board voted and decided to fill the Regional Vice President’s position with Doug Eng who was previously our Treasurer.  With Doug moving into the Regional Vice President position, we then filled his Treasurer’s position with Vice President Mike Mercier.  We have a strong board of officers and look forward to an exciting and prosperous two years together!

Here is a look at your updated 2012 USPTA New England Board of Officers:

    President
    Chris Stevens

    Regional VP
    Doug Eng (previously Treasurer)

    Secretary
    Connie McHugh

    Treasurer
Michael Mercier (previously a Vice President)

    Vice President
    Phil Parrish

    Vice President
    Steve Thuot

    Past President
    Jacques Faulise

  2. The nice weather lies ahead and it is time to think about our Spring Convention.  We have selected a new site and new dates to attract more members this year.  The 2012 Spring USPTA Convention will be held at the beautiful Woodstock Inn and Resort in Woodstock, Vermont on April 27-29.  This will be a great opportunity to get away from your job and decompress before the upcoming summer season.  Our jobs are stressful so please join us for this relaxing educational opportunity to network, party and kick back a little!  A full description of this wonderful weekend will follow in the next few weeks!
  3. Finally, as we are putting together our speaker’s lineup for the Spring Convention, it is important to have new speakers present and share their professional knowledge.  If you or you know of someone who would be a good speaker at our next Convention in Vermont, please contact Doug Eng at douglas.w.eng@gmail.com .

Thank you and the board of officers look forward to seeing many of you in April in Woodstock!

Chris Stevens
USPTA NE President

Register your Lessons for Life events

The USPTA would like to thank all of you who have been participating in this year's Lessons for Life campaign. We realize many of you have already submitted your information to us. However, there are a number of events that go unrecorded each year because of busy schedules or lack of information on how to register events. We want everyone who has participated in Lessons for Life this year to please submit their information to the World Headquarters, so that we can give you and your division the proper credit for your efforts and help USPTA reach its fundraising goal.

Hundreds of United States Professional Tennis Association members across the nation hosted free Tennis Across America clinics with the theme of Tennis – for the health of it! on May 14, to celebrate the 22nd annual Tennis Across America Day. While the overall goal of Tennis Across America has always been to take the game of tennis to new, current and former players, this year the focus is on promoting the health benefits of tennis to help support efforts to reduce obesity.

Harvard University approved as USPTA Regional Testing Center

The United States Professional Tennis Association, the world’s leader in tennis-teaching certification, has created a system of regional testing centers. These regional testing centers offer the Certification Exam, including the review course, PTCAI, written exam, grip exam, private lesson, group lesson, feeding exam and stroke production tests.

USPTA selected major metropolitan areas with populations of at least 3 million people, strategically placed geographically around the United States, allowing USPTA regional testing centers to be available to the greatest number of potential applicants. The USPTA national testing committee recently approved Harvard University’s application proposal by Michael Mercier, the head tennis professional at the site.

Wheelchair Tennis is Fundamental Tennis

The 2011 New England Wheelchair Tennis Camp, held at Harvard University in August, was not only a great time for wheelchair tennis players, but for teaching professionals as well. A half dozen professionals successfully completed a USPTA Wheelchair Certification session during the course of the camp, and came away with new teaching skills and a deeper connection to tennis. Over the course of many years of directing Wheelchair Certification sessions, I've seen that certification can help professionals improve their teaching skills, inspire more passion and commitment to teaching tennis, and help them to better connect their students with some of the core principles of successful tennis.
